Finding popuplar solutions to climate change - FAQ

DEADLINES

What is the deadline for the entire data collection?
No data collected after 31/1 2026 can be contributed thowards the project.

TRANSLATION

Some, but not all, collaborators will be involved in translating the Climate survey. When translating, it is VERY IMPORTANT that you do not alter the meaning of any question, as all surveys will be merged into one large data set by the end of the data collection.

Not everyone will be asked to assist in the translation process, as it’s not necessary. If you have not received an email about translation before 10/10 your assistance is not needed this time. Instead, you will receive a link that has been translated and quality checked by another GSN collaborator.

If you have been selected to assist with translation, please follow these instructions check the translation.

If you are not satisfied with the work of the other collaborator, you will be able to make alterations afterwards.

TRANSLATION GUIDELINES

The purpose of the Translation Guidelines is to guarantee data integrity of the global dataset.

  • You are allowed to add and change information in the intro section (except the part circled in red) as you wish, as long as the respondent is informed about the following:

    • It is connected to The Institute for Futures Studies.

    • The aim of the study.

    • That the respondent is free to change their mind at any time.

    • That all data is anonymized.

  • Apart from the intro section cannot alter the meaning of any item.

  • You cannot remove or add items or alternatives yourself, as it will jeopardise the data integrity if done incorrectly. Corrie can assist you if you need to make alterations.

  • You cannot move any items or blocks.

  • You cannot alter the order of any response alternatives.

  • CO2 may be changed into Carbondioxide, or the other way around, if the collab think it will be easier for the respondents to understand.

  • If you receive your translation and there is still an item or alternative that you have previously flagged as offensive, but it has not been removed, please get in touch with Corrie and she’ll remove it.

  • If there is an item that was flagged as not relevant to your site (for example wind power at sea, even though your country doens’t have a coast), please let the item be included. The respondents will have the choice of “I don’t know”, and this information is important too.

RUNNING YOUR SURVEY

Is there anything I need to do before I start distributing my link?

Yes! Please inform Corrie though globalsocialnorms@gmail.com which date you plan to start distributing your link. All data entered into your survey before that date will be deleted.

Can I see how many responses I have collected?

Yes. You have been added as a collaborator in Qualtrics. Check your inbox for an email with the subject “Pontus Strimling shared a Qualtrics survey with you” and follow the link to create a free account (if you don’t already have one). Once logged in, go to Data & AnalysisRecorded responses to view your response count as in this printscreen.

FUNDING

Is there any funding for data collection available?
Yes, there is some funding for collaborators in low- and middle-income countries available if requested during the sign-up phase.

Individuals cannot be offered funding as a single entity. All funding must be invoiced through a company, university or NGO, due to Swedish legislation.

When can I invoice?
You may invoice between 15/10 2025 - 15/2 2026.

How do I invoice?
You may use your organization’s invoice template, or this template.

We cooperate with Linköping University (LiU) for invoicing. You can find LiU’s invoicing instructions here.

Please send your invoice (or the whole excel file above) by email to globalsocialnorms@gmail.com for futher pocessing.

When will the funds arrive?
In accordance with Linköping university’s invoice policy your invoice will be paid on its due date. After the invoice is paid your organization should recieve the funds within 3-4 business days. If you have not recievde the funds after four business days, please contact globalsocialnorms@gmail.com.

DATA SECURITY

Do you record participants’ IP addresses?
No. To ensure full anonymity, we don’t record participants’ IP addresses.

Can respondents withdraw their data after participation?
Since answers are completely anonymous, data cannot be withdrawn once the survey has been submitted. If local ethics regulations require a different procedure, please contact globalsocialnorms@gmail.com.

ETHICS

Do you have ethics approval for the study?
By Swedish regulations, fully anonymous studies of consenting adults, such as the present one, need not pass ethics vetting. It is possible, however, to get a “guiding statement.” Unfortunately, the Swedish Ethical Review Authority communicates in Swedish only. In case it might still be useful for you (using automatic translation), the application can be found here, and the guiding statement will be uploaded here as soon as it’s issued.

Note that the Swedish law, and consequently the guiding statement, only applies to research conducted within Sweden. In this project that means collecting the Swedish sample and data analysis.

Do I have to apply for ethics approval in my country?
Collaborators are responsible for complying to ethics procedure as required by local regulations.

CV of PI Pontus Strimling
Please find Prof. Strimling’s CV here.

Swedish ethics application
You can download the
Swedish ethics application here.

Is there a project description available?
Yes, you can find a project description, including method and timeline,
here.

SAMPLE

What sample size should be collected?
We aim for a minimum of 200 respondents per site. Some sites will collect additional data. For sites with very low population size, lower numbers are acceptable.

Do respondents need to be over the age of 18?
Yes. All respondents must be at least 18 years old.

Do we have to collect representative samples?
No. We aim for convenience samples only. For most sites, this means students.

ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTS

If you need any additional documents such as support letter, award letter, collab letter or similar, please email globalsocialnorms@gmail.com for assistance.

QUESTIONNAIRE

How long is the questionnaire?

We expect it will take 15-20 minutes to complete the questionnaire.
