A Study of Everyday Norms

A Study of Everyday Norms

This study examines everyday norms, shared expectations about when ordinary actions are socially appropriate. Here, everyday behaviors refers to common acts that many people perform routinely and that most individuals could perform if they chose to.

Examples of such behaviors include laughing, eating, kissing, singing, or speaking loudly. Although these actions are broadly feasible across settings, their perceived propriety often depends on context. We therefore investigate how judgments of appropriateness vary as a function of both situational context (where the behavior occurs) and social context (who performs the behavior and who else is present).

Ethics application and guiding statement (in Swedish)

By Swedish regulations, fully anonymous studies of consenting adults, such as the present one, need not pass ethics vetting. It is possible, however, to get a “guiding statement.” Unfortunately, the Swedish Ethical Review Authority communicates in Swedish only. In case it might still be useful for you, the application can be found here, and the guiding statement here.

Note that the Swedish law, and consequently the guiding statement, only applies to research conducted within Sweden. In this project that means collecting the Swedish sample and data analysis.
